The wheel head is recessed in the body of the wheel to work as an integrated splash pan. It is offered in three different models:

Classic (1/3hp) model delivers power and professional performance at an affordable price. Designed for most studios and classrooms, this wheel centers more than 100 lbs. of clay with ease.

Color: Forest Green.

Elite (1/2hp) model offers more power with its1/2hp motor. Clay throwing capacities exceed 150 lbs.

Color: Royal Blue

Professional (1hp) model offers the largest motor in the industry, capable of centering over 400 lbs. of clay, challenging you to push the limits of your imagination.

Color: Forest Green.

Additional Information

Thomas Stuart Electric Wheels are the ultimate wheels for professional potters and schools. Take a look closer to see why the POWER, DESIGN, & DURABILITY of our electric wheels is unmatched by any other wheel on the market today.
All Thomas Stuart Wheels are built on a heavy cast aluminum base that is powder coated for a durable, elegant, and easy to clean finish. Each wheel comes equipped with our special cast aluminum foot pedal. These foot pedals move on Teflon glides for smooth action and precision control.

Industrial grade, continual duty motors are used on every Thomas Stuart Electric Wheel. Our motors are almost twice the size of the standard peak rated motors that are used on most potter's wheels. Why do we do this? Because, there is a significant difference in the amount of torque that they produce. Don't get caught comparing wheels solely on the horsepower rating, because two different 1/3hp wheels can produce a completely different amount of torque at the wheel head. The torque a wheel produces is the amount of power you have to center clay. Our 1/3hp motor puts out more torque than most competitors' 1/2hp motors. See more information about motor comparisons.

Each wheel has an industrial grade motor controller that is the "brain" of the wheel. It controls the minimum and maximum speeds, senses the feedback from the motor, and provides constant torque through all speed ranges. Our controllers have 6 adjustments that allow you to customize your wheel to respond to your specific needs.

Other wheels may claim to center a specified amount, but none as easily or convincingly as a Thomas Stuart. Given enough water and soft enough clay, you can make any wheel look like it is centering a large amount of clay. Test any wheel by trying to stop the wheel head without any clay on it. The majority of wheels on the market can be stopped significantly easier than others. All of our models are convincingly stronger than their counter parts.

Design is also an incredibly important component to the Thomas Stuart Wheels. All of our wheel heads are removable by simply twisting and lifting. All models come with a flat 14" wheel head, accurately machined with concentric lines for ease in positioning work on center.

Both the built-in splash pan design and the removable splash pan design can be easily cleaned by simply removing the wheel head. It also allows you to switch to our optional plaster bat/cup head system. The shaft extension is also an option for the built-in splash pan models.

All Motors Are Not Created Equal

Confused by all the manufacturer's claims about pottery wheel throwing capacities? You have every right to be. Let's try to clear things up a little. Many manufacturers are using motors rated as "peak" horsepower not "continual duty" horsepower.

Industrial motors are "continual duty" motors which means they are designed to run fully loaded 24 hours a day without overheating. "Peak rated motors" are rated to provide power for a very short period of time (usually just a few minutes). This information should be on the motor nameplate. Avoid wheels whose motors have no nameplate rating.

Temperature is the greatest enemy of variable speed motors. The slower the motor turns, the more heat is built up. Also, when overheated, the brushes degrade faster causing increased wear on the commutator. Larger motors have superior insulation and more windings, which allow greater dissipation of motor heat. Check to see if the motor has an integrated fan for additional cooling. This allows these motors to run cooler and last longer.

Be sure to look at the motor's physical size before buying a wheel. The bigger the motor is, the more torque you will have to throw pots.

Horsepower alone doesn't guarantee a smooth running wheel. Good electronics together with continual duty motors allow the maximum amount of torque per horsepower rating on the motor.

The torque a wheel produces is the amount of power you will have to center clay. Our 1/3 hp motor produces more torque than most competitors' 1/2 hp motors. Both our 3/4 hp and 1 hp motors are the largest motors available on potter's wheels today.

With all Thomas Stuart Wheels, you can be assured of years of maintenance free service with the highest torque output on the market today. By choosing the most reputable U.S. motor companies, we provide simply the best motors available on all of our wheels.
